The Orval brewery produces only one beer for sale, a high-fermentation beer that continues to ferment in the bottle. It has an alcohol content of 6.2%. This beer is brewed exclusively from spring water, barley malt, hop cones, candy sugar, and yeast. Its aroma and fine taste are more attributable to the hop cones and yeast than to the malt used. What makes Orval beer special is that hops are added at two different stages of the production process. First, a large amount of very fine hops is added in the brew house – this creates the famous bitter taste and is why the beer has a longer shelf life. Later, in the storage cellars, hops are added again. This is the so-called British "dry hopping," which creates the delightful aroma that completely captivates even the most carefully prepared connoisseur. In the tasting room, Orval's beer and cheese make a truly good pair: the unique shape of the bottle and glass, the design of the label, the coasters, and other promotional materials – it's all a legacy from the early 1930s.
