Indulgence 10 is composed of several imperial stout bases and aged in various barrels and brands. The first half of the blend is aged in Appleton rum and rhum barrels. 'What's the difference between rum and rhum?' Well, rum is made from the molasses obtained during sugarcane processing. Rhum, however, is made from freshly pressed sugarcane juice grown specifically for rhum and is only produced on the island of Martinique. Stouts aged in rhum barrels therefore have a slightly less intense molasses flavor but are just as potent as other rums. The second half of the blend is aged in Heaven Hill bourbon and Weller barrels. These were the first Weller barrels the brewers used, and they absolutely loved them. The beers turned out fudgy, complex, and had notes of dried fruit, much like some red wines.The complete blend for Indulgence 10 is very complex due to the use of different, but exquisite, barrel types. This beer pours almost still and has a very low carbonation level to ensure the best experience. This allows the delicate flavors of the barrels and the beer to shine through. The aroma starts with a hint of molasses and rum, then quickly transforms into coffee and bourbon vanilla. A good red wine or ruby port also joins the party. The taste is intense, rum-forward, wine-like, and spicy. Following the prominent flavors are notes of licorice. The mouthfeel is oily, fudgy, well-rounded, and warm. The beer finishes dry, and you'll crave your next sip.
