Agatha Christie's detective Hercule Poirot (probably Belgium's best-known citizen and a native son of Ellezelles) is the namesake of the "Hercule" Stout. It is the only truly Belgian stout, and as sturdy and courageous as its namesake. Hercule is considered a classic by many: very malty, yet dry, with a hint of sweetness in the finish, and perfectly hopped. It has a very distinctive and intoxicating spicy aroma of fresh fir wood that suddenly, irresistibly, fills the room when the swing-top is released. This unique house character likely comes from the yeast strains the brewery uses – and possibly also from the oak fermentation – as the beers consist entirely of malt and hops, without any herbs or spices.
