Tommie Sjef Grape 2022 - 75 CL
The brewers regularly release a new vintage Grape; it's the beer that started it all. A wild beer made with organic red wine grapes (harvested in 2021, Mátra region, Hungary). This year's vintage is made exclusively with Kékfrankos grapes. A perfect grape variety that combines excellently with our wild ales. We used a blend of different wild ales (aged for about two years in wooden barrels), had refermentation and macerated on the wine grapes for another year. The long maceration with the grapes gives the beer more structure and layered flavor, as the skins of the grapes have had time to release their tannins and flavor. In this vintage, the brewers tried to focus on the interaction of the slightly more pronounced bitterness and delicate fruity aromas of the aged hops that the brewers used in the beer, and on the tannins of the wine grapes. In our opinion, this has resulted in a very well-balanced wild beer, where the boundaries between beer and (natural) wine are perfectly blurred. In its aroma, Druif (2022) shows strawberries and ripe peaches, together with dark cherries, a light hint of almond and a touch of wood from the oak barrels. Tastefully it starts with the typical notes of dark cherries and blackberries from Kékfrankos. This bold fruitiness is accompanied by a soft sourness and a fairly dry, almost port-like aftertaste. The tannin-rich part of blackberry seed and almond is present in the aftertaste, together with a hint of creamy oak.
